What are Devotions?

Devotions are prayers and practises, which, while not forming part of the church’s formal liturgy, form a significant portion of the prayer and spiritual formation of Catholics.

Certain devotions have developed over time as our understanding of the faith has grown. Many of them have been supernaturally revealed by Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Examples of these include prayers such as the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, and Sacramentals such as the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Carmel and the Miraculous Medal. Private revelations through history have led to devotional practices such as devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
